Only African Muslims celebrate Maulid – NPP Awal fires

The Head of Public Relations for the Youth Employment Agency, Awal Mohammed who doubles as communicator for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said that Prophet Muhammad (S. A. W.) never celebrate his birthday, which is called Maulid by Muslims.

According to the NPP communicator, the Prophet didn’t even instruct the Muslim community to do so neither, adding that it is only celebrated by African Muslims, emphasizing that the world recognized Muslim scholars don’t recognize the celebration.

“This season has become quite controversial among Muslims due to what is known as Maulid, which involves celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.

Last year, I was with Sirh BrYte  when some Muslims presented an invitation to a prominent figure to attend a Maulid event. The man began to discuss his itinerary, which included visits to approximately three Maulids during the month.

As we walked away, Bright asked me a question: “Isn’t Maulid supposed to be the celebration of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday?” I answered in the affirmative. He then inquired, “Is it that you all don’t know the exact date of his birth, or do you simply want to partake in the festivities?” He drew a parallel with the birth of Jesus Christ, which Christians celebrate on a single day worldwide.

I told him that this is one of the questions that some of us have been asking for decades without receiving clear answers.

I went on to explain to him that, to the best of my knowledge, the celebration of Prophet Muhammad’s birth lacks a basis in Islam. Prophet Muhammad didn’t celebrate it, nor did he instruct anyone to do so. Those who followed him didn’t observe such celebrations either. Moreover, all globally recognized imams don’t partake in it.

In fact, this celebration is primarily observed in Africa and isn’t common in Saudi Arabia or most dominant Islamic countries.

May Allah guide us on the right path.
Aameen”, Awal Mohammed wrote.
