Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) is on indefinite strike for what the association described as “refusal of Mayor Sule Saifu to apologize for slapping its member”.

According to the organization, the incident happened sometime ago in the presence of the Northern Regional minister, Alhaji Saani Alhassan where Mr. Sule Saifu, the mayor of Tamale was alleged to have assaulted one Suleman Yakubu Tikumah, a member of CLOGSAG.

The association said even though, the northern regional minister rebuked the mayor and gave him a directive to apologize in writing and pay for the damages caused, the attacker has since refused to do so.

RE: ASSAULT OF SULEMAN YAKUBU TIKUMAH REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER BY HONOURABLE SULE SALIFU – TAMALE METROPOLITAN CHIEF EXECUTIVE

We have received a brief and an update from the Northern Regional
Secretariat of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana
(CLOGSAG) on a case of assault on one of our members, Suleman Yakubu Tikumah, Regional Environmental Health Officer at the Tamale Regional Coordinating Council, by the Honourable Sule Salifu, Tamale
Metropolitan Chief Executive.

After the Hon. Regional Minister had intervened and it was agreed at a
meeting that:

• the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) should apologize in writing and

• settle all damages he caused.
(CLOGSAG)

The MCE, to date, has not complied with the agreement. The posture and demeanor of the Metropolitan Chief Executive are indications that he disrespects lawful advice from the Regional Minister. Again it shows by his actions that he does not regret in any way his assault on Mr. Suleman Yakubu Tikumah, a member of CLOGSAG.

As the staff of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council and the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly are on the urge and feel insecure and threatened, it is advisable for them to stay away from work until congenial atmosphere is created.

In this regard, all CLOGSAG members in the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly as well as the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, Tamale, are asked to stay at home until further notice with effect from Monday, 19th February, 2024.
